If your domain name is expired, you CANNOT transfer it. You will have to renew it with your current registrar or wait for the current registrar to release it.
When a transfer request is submitted,
an authorization email is sent to the email address of the admin contact for the
domain being transferred. If this address is not an address where you can receive
email, please change the admin email address with the current registrar before submitting
the transfer request. This will insure a timely and successful transfer.
